Prisoner a-7713: Antisemitism = Racism = Hate Sliding Back in Time Or, Did We Actually Ever Move Forward?

Artist statement:

This piece takes the form of a human heart made of fencing material and speaks to the rise of antisemitism and hate crimes, while the word “justice” appears in many languages within the concrete base. The title references the number assigned to and tattooed on Eli Wiesel’s arm when he arrived at Auschwitz.

Created in collaboration with the ADL.

 

Caron Tabb was born in apartheid South Africa, raised on a farm in Israel from the age of eight, and has lived in the US for the last twenty years. These key biographical elements and her passion for social justice issues deeply impact her artistic practice. In addition to traditional painting and photography, Caron incorporates many found objects and unconventional materials into her work. Her conceptual mixed-media and instillation art address issues of social inequality, racial justice, and feminism as seen through the lens of her deep Jewish identity.

Discussion: Hate Crimes, Antisemitism, and Racial Bias

(1 hr 26 min) An online discussion featuring 2 of the 6 Boston-based Be the Change artists, Caron Tabb and Jason Talbot, in conversation with leading experts Rabbi Menachem Creditor, and Ruth Messinger.

 

Ruth Messinger is the former President and CEO of American Jewish World Service and an icon of the social justice movement.

 

Rabbi Menachem Creditor is the Pearl and Ira Meyer Scholar-in-Residence at UJA-Federation New York and founder of Rabbis Against Gun Violence.

 

Robert Trestan is the Executive Director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Boston office where he oversees the League’s fundraising, program initiatives and leadership development.
